ESLP0570AA English for Special Purposes: Technology

ESLP0570AA English for Special Purposes: Technology

Course Instructor: Adrian DeMuro
Email: demuroad@shu.edu,  tel. 973-761-9254 Office: 571 Jubilee Hall

Course meeting day/time: Tuesday 10:00 AM to 12:45 PM
Course location: Jubilee 233 (or designated computer lab)

This course is designed to improve English language skills, at the high-intermediate and advanced level, within the context of computer technology. While discussing various relevant topics and completing projects on current issues in the field of information technology, course participants will work to develop fluency, structure, vocabulary, writing, and presentation skills.  Several workshops through the Computer Training Center (CTC) and guest presenters will be offered. Training sessions both during class time and as outside assignments will be assigned, to enhance participants' computer skills and knowledge.

Course requirements: Students are expected to
     *attend all classes,
     *participate in  discussion,
     *complete assignments,
*prepare presentations to be delivered in class as well as online, and
*use English in all aspects of the course, including technology.

All students should know their username and password for their SHU accounts:LAN (Novell), Blackboard, and Webmail.  See the instructor or Computer Services Help Desk in Corrigan Hall. For an immediate question or advice, you may call them on campus ext. 2222. From your phone, that is 973-275-2222.

You are encouraged (but not required) to bring your laptop (notebook) computer to class. The CS Dept. can help you set up access and the wireless connection for use on campus.

Where their knowledge of a particular technology is not as developed as they'd like, students should ask questions, seek help from their colleagues and instructors, and frequent the CTC to become more familiar with the subjects of the course. The purpose of the course is not only to learn technology, but to improve English skills as well.

Course texts: Texts and materials will be available on internet (links below) and through handouts in class.
