Sports Psychology (Certificate)
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The
interdisciplinary Certificate in Sport and Exercise Psychology is
designed to develop knowledge in the core biopsychosocial areas of
Sport and Exercise Psychology. Courses focus on theory and
applications of sport psychology, exercise physiology, specific
psychological interventions and performance enhancement techniques,
and social and cultural issues in management of sport organizations.
Throughout the curriculum, experiential techniques and case studies
are used to enhance student learning.
ADMISSIONS
Graduate
students in the Department of Professional Psychology & Family
Therapy at Seton Hall may take the certificate courses as part of
their electives or program concentration, if approved by an advisor.
Upon completion of the remaining certificate courses, students will
be awarded the certificate.
Licensed professionals in psychology, social work, marriage and family therapy, or counseling may apply for the certificate as a nonmatriculated student.
Students with a bachelor’s degree in psychology or a related area may apply for the certificate as a nonmatriculated student.
DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
(Total: 5 courses, 16 graduate credits)
Psychology of Sport
& Exercise (CPSY 7105) 3 credits
Basic
theory and applications in Sport Psychology, with an emphasis on
enhancing athletic performance, as well as understanding the impact
of injuries. Course includes social/psychological aspects of sport
and exercise.
Exercise Physiology (GMED
6014) 4 credits
Presents the
responses of the human body to normal and pathological processes,
conditions, and manifestations in relation to their influence on human
performance. Emphasis is placed on the study of muscle physiology,
metabolism, cardiovascular and respiratory adaptation, aging,
thermoregulation, strengthening, training, and exercise prescription.
Application of examination and evaluation procedures is provided thru the
use of selected human performance instruments.
Mind Body Issues &
Interventions (CPSY 8007) 3 credits
Course covers performance enhancement techniques, mental imagery,
meditation, mindfulness, spirituality, stress management, exercise in
psychotherapy, and other interventions used in traditional psychotherapy and
counseling, as well as Sport Psychology , and health and wellness programs.
Management of Sport Organizations (BSPM 7535) 3 credits
The application of management
concepts and theories to sport organizations and the sport industry.
Includes issues of organizational design, governance, public policy, labor
relations and collective bargaining, ethical issues in sport, and
globalization of the sport industry.
Special Topics: Case Studies
and Applications in Sport & Exercise Psychology (CPSY 8541) 3 credits
This
course is meant to cover in depth applications and case studies in sport
